Thaipusam marks the day Goddess Parvati gave the Vel (spear) to Murugan. Murugan defeated demon Soorapadman with the Vel. The demon transformed into a peacock and rooster, becoming Murugan's mount and flag. Celebrated grandly at Palani and other Arupadai Veedu temples.
