Lord Shiva appeared as a column of light at Arunachala. Brahma and Vishnu tried to find his head and feet respectively. They realized Shiva's infinite nature and worshipped him. The Maha Deepam lit atop the hill at Tiruvannamalai represents Shiva's light form.
